Triumph Over Adversity: Paul’s Second Letter to Timothy

Thursday, June 17th, 2010

June 17, 2010

In Paul’s second letter to Timothy we see the heart of a man who has faced many of the brutal challenges that we face today. He is imprisoned, shunned, left alone, chastised, yet through all these things Paul knows where to look and what to focus on. He looks to God’s comfort, the joy of fellowship with the Church. We are shown that we are to be strong in grace; partly because of the grace we are given now and also from the grace that we are to look forward to. We are not to be ashamed of the gospel for it is life and peace unto others. In all things we are to boldly proclaim the gospel and leave the worries of this life to God our father who does everything for us.

God’s sufficiency vs man’s inability

Thursday, May 6th, 2010

May 6, 2010

Man places great weight on his own accomplishments but when seen through God’s framework, man is incapable and flailing. When man tries to work it is the ministry of death, a ministry of failure. God tells us that He is our sufficiency, that He will work through us with his mighty power to bring about peace, love, understanding, etc; God will bring about all the accomplishments that man talks about and strives towards but are never able to accomplish. When we let God work in us we have the ministry of the Spirit and what a powerful ministry it is.

Verses:
Ephesians 3:20-21
Jeremiah 32:17
Jeremiah 32:27
II Corinthians 3:1-14
Hebrews 13:9
Galatians 5:16-23
Romans 14:17
Philippians 2:13

Let God Be Your Fortress

Thursday, February 18th, 2010

February 8, 2010

Man likes to be comfortable. He likes to build up walls that he thinks are secure through material things, personal relationships, ideas about the world and how it should be run. But man very often misses spiritual realities that only God can make him aware of. Like many of the great believers before us, such as Jonah, Abraham, Moses, Paul, Peter, we should step out of our comfort zone and stand in God’s strength and knowledge. “The Lord shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in From this time forth, and even for evermore.” – Psalms 121:8

Verses:
Psalm 18:1-2
Jonah 1: – 2:10
Exodus 14:1-16
Acts 27:10-25, 29-41
Psalm 121:1-8
Psalm 125:1

Lights of this World

Friday, January 22nd, 2010

January 21, 2009

God calls himself light, Jesus Christ said he was the light of this world, and we as Christians are called the lights of this world. This light that we are is a reflection of God’s light; he is the source, the giver, and we are the rays which impart energy to the world. As the lights of this world we push back the darkness which besets it. To be a light of the world all we need to do is follow the example of Christ, to put on the mind of Christ. Through our walk with God, by spreading his word and doing good works, we confirm that God is light and we spread that light to others which brings glory to God.
